Erik e Phillip aspirano a diventare scrittori di successo. Mentre Erik viene respinto dagli editori perché privo di talento, però, il manoscritto di Phillip viene accettato e in pochissimo tempo il giovane diventa un nome di punta sulla scena culturale norvegese. Sei mesi dopo, Erik e i suoi amici vanno a trovare Phillip nella clinica psichiatrica in cui è stato ricoverato per riportarlo a casa. La scrittura è l'ultima cosa a cui pensa, mentre Erik persevera nei suoi tentativi e prova a convincere anche l'amico a ricominciare.
Erik and Phillip are trying to make it as writers. Erik is rejected by publishers as lacking in talent, while Phillip's manuscript is accepted and the young man becomes a major name on the Norwegian cultural scene practically overnight. Six months later, Erik and his friends come to visit Phillip at a psychiatric hospital to bring him home after a long-term treatment. Writing is the last thing on Phillip's mind, but Erik is continuing his literary attempts and tries to convince his friend to go back to writing.
Note di regia / director' notes"Il mio intento era dipingere un ambiente culturale molto specifico, con personaggi che conosco molto bene. Volevo girare un film sull'amicizia e sulle aspirazioni che si dissolvono di fronte alla realtà della vita. Volevo un film che fosse pieno di contrasti così come le vite dei protagonisti. Volevo usare un linguaggio cinematografico che riflettesse la cultura narrativa tipica di un gruppo di amici ventitreenni, ricercato e aperto, pieno di aneddoti e digressioni, ma anche di dolori e delusioni appena sottese alla superficie. Reprise è insieme accorato e triste, divertente e malinconico".
"What I wanted to do was depict a very specific cultural environment, with characters that I know intimately. I wanted to make a film about friendships and aspirations that fail. I wanted to make a film that was as full of contrasts in its form as the lives of the characters in it. I wanted to use a film language that reflected the narrative culture typical of a gang of 23-year-old boys, full of anecdotes and digressions, but with pain and disappointment lying just below the surface. Reprise is intended to be both light-hearted and sad, amusing and melancholic."
