Com’è possibile che tranquilli cittadini diventino dei mostri? Qual è il meccanismo che spinge una persona a torturarne un’altra? Cosa significa per l’opinione pubblica statunitense avere le immagini di questi abusi nella coscienza? E noi, cosa sentiamo, pensiamo, a vedere le scene filmate dentro la prigione di Abu Ghraib? Le interviste che la regista realizza con alcune vittime della torture e con i loro carnefici, insieme alla ricostruzione delle condizioni della prigione, ci spingono a chiederci: perché vengono processati e puniti soltanto soldati e ufficiali colpevoli, mentre negli alti ranghi del governo e dell’esercito si trovano tanti uomini impuniti? Uomini che hanno ideato e ordinato queste torture nelle prigioni di Abu Ghraib e di Guantanamo, come anche in Afghanistan.
How can ordinary people turn into monsters? Which dynamics lead a person to torture another one? What do those images mean to the American public? And what do we feel and think when we see the scenes taped inside Abu Ghraib? The filmmaker's interviews with some of the victims and their persecutors, together with a reconstruction of the prison's overall conditions, bring up the following question: why do soldiers and officers undergo a trial, while high-ranking members of the government and army go unpunished? They are the ones who conceived and commanded the tortures in Abu Ghraib and in Guantanamo, just like in Afghanistan.
