Il lavoro di Henry Coombes si occupa di sondare l'intreccio di connotazioni politiche, culturali e di classe degli strumenti tradizionali con cui lavora. I colori a olio e gli acquarelli vengono utilizzati per sedurre lo spettatore con immagini familiari e confortevoli che a uno sguardo più attento lasciano però trasparire risvolti oscuri e sovversivi.
Coombes è nato a Londra nel 1977 e nel 2002 ha conseguito la laurea presso la Glasgow School of Art. Da allora ha presentato esibizioni personali alla Glasgow's Transmission Gallery, allo Switchspace, alla Sorcha Dallas Gallery e alla Anna Helwing Gallery.
Nel 2005 Coombes è stato insignito dello Scottish Arts Council/Scottish Screen Film Award e il suo cortometraggio Laddy and the Lady è stato presentato in anteprima al Tramway di Glasgow nel giugno del 2006, per poi essere proiettato in Germania all'Oberhausen Film Festival nel maggio del 2007. Nello stesso anno ha anche vinto il prestigioso Creative Scotland Award, per sviluppare un nuovo progetto filmico. Nel giugno del 2007 ha rappresentato la Scozia alla Biennale di Venezia con una serie di progetti tra cui una personale alla Art Basel Miami Beach, a dicembre, e una personale alla Susie Q Gallery di Zurigo, nel gennaio del 2008. Coombes vive e lavora a Glasgow ed è rappresentato dalla Sorcha Dallas.
Henry Coombes's work is concerned with investigating the entrenched political, cultural and class connotation of the traditional media in which he works. Oil paint and watercolour are used to seduce the viewer into familiar and wholesome images, which on closer inspection reveal a dark and subversive subtext. Coombes was born in London in 1977 and completed his BA at Glasgow School of Art in 2002. Since then he has had solo shows at Glasgow's Transmission Gallery, Switchspace, Sorcha Dallas Gallery and Anna Helwing Gallery.
Coombes was a recipient of The 2005 Scottish Arts Council/Scottish Screen Film award and his short film, Laddy and the Lady, was premiered at the Tramway, Glasgow in June 2006 and screened at the Oberhausen Film Festival, Germany in May 2007. He was also awarded in 2007 the prestigious Creative Scotland Award to develop a new film project. He represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale in June 2007 with forthcoming projects including a Solo Position at Art Basel Miami Beach in December and a Solo Project at Susie Q Gallery, Zurich in January 2008. Coombes lives and works in Glasgow and is represented by Sorcha Dallas.
