Valdivia, Cile. Tre anni fa, al filmmaker indipendente Daniel Benavides viene chiesto di realizzare un film all'interno di un laboratorio per ragazzi di una quarta liceo. In fase di scrittura, il gruppo cerca un'ispirazione che si avvicini alla loro realtà, e allo stesso tempo documenti la crisi di valori avvertita dagli adolescenti cileni, negli anni post-dittatura. Poi, un caso di cronaca: una diciassettenne trovata morta senza apparenti motivi. E l'esigenza di raccontare quella storia, per raccontarne altre. I ragazzi hanno scritto il film, supportati dal filmmaker e da uno sceneggiatore, e ne sono diventati i protagonisti, impostando l'intreccio della trama, scegliendone le atmosfere, diventando persino gli attori protagonisti.

Ne viene fuori un noir gelido, freddo, che coraggiosamente mescola le serie televisive come O.C. e C.S.I. con Melville e Twin Peaks. A metà tra il giallo e la ricostruzione sociale: l'assassino è entre nosotros, a Santiago come a Roma come a New York.

Valdivia, Chile. Three years ago the independent filmmaker Daniel Benavides was asked to make a film during a workshop for 17-year-old secondary school students. While writing the film, the group searched for inspiration in reality, and at the same time tried to portrait the loss of values experienced by Chilean teenagers in the post-dictatorship years. Then the news reported that a 17-year-old girl had been killed for no apparent reason, and they felt the urge of using that particular piece of news to represent many more stories. With the help of the filmmaker and of a screenwriter, the students wrote the film, and they also became its protagonists.

The result is an ice-cold noir thriller that boldly mixes TV-series like The O.C. and C.S.I. with Melville and Twin Peaks. Halfway between a detective story and a social portrait: the murderer is among us, in Santiago, as much as in Rome and New York.

Note di regia - Director's statement:
"El asesino entre nosotros nasce da un progetto collettivo di creazione audiovisiva realizzato con giovani tra i 16 e i 18 anni all'interno di un liceo, dove abbiamo attivato laboratori di recitazione e sceneggiatura. Da un lato, abbiamo chiesto ai ragazzi quali fossero le tematiche che stavano loro più a cuore, dall'altra il laboratorio di recitazione li preparava ad interpretare i personaggi di quello che stavamo scrivendo come lungometraggio di finzione, il primo ad essere girato nella città di Valdivia, nel sud del Cile. Proprio in quei giorni, ad una festa dove si trovavano anche alcuni dei miei alunni, scomparve una studentessa universitaria, e le vie si riempirono di fotocopie della foto del suo viso sorridente, che ricordavano le immagini dei "desaparecidos" durante il regime militare di Pinochet.

Questo e altri tragici casi di giovani morti in simili circostanze ci fecero decidere per questo tema; ho cominciato a scrivere la sceneggiatura, con l'apporto continuo dei ragazzi e la collaborazione dello sceneggiatore cileno Gerardo Cáceres. Con molta energia collettiva e poche risorse abbiamo prodotto questo film, per cui ci siamo ispirati alle atmosfere di Twin Peaks, Rashomon, The Gift e M - eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder".

"El asesino entre nosotros is the result of a collective audiovisual project that involved teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age. We organized acting and screenwriting workshops at their secondary school. On the one hand, we asked them what themes they had at heart most, on the other hand the workshop on acting prepared them to play the characters of what was meant to be a fiction feature, the first to be shot in Valdivia, South Chile. Right in those days a college student disappeared during a party some of my students had gone to: the streets were filled with posters showing her smiling face, that looked like the pictures of "the disappeared" during Pinochet's regime.

This and other cases of people died in similar circumstances led us to choose this topic. So, with the help of the guys and of Chilean screenwriter Gerardo Cáceres, I started to write the script. Eventually, relying on our enthusiasm and on very little money, we managed to produce this film, that draws inspiration from Twin Peaks, Rashomon, The Gift, and M - eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder".
