Involontariamente: fuochi d'artificio colpiscono l'occhio di un attempato signore che va a una cena di gala. Involontariamente: alcuni bulli vengono incolpati di aver rotto il bagno di un pullman. Involontariamente: una ragazzina si ubriaca e viene riaccompagnata a casa da uno sconosciuto.
Involuntary è così. Un film corale, nella straniante estate svedese, dove gli avvenimenti sembrano non avere un principio di causa, ma solo degli effetti imprevedibili.

Sospeso in un tempo alienato, girato solo in inquadrature fisse, è l’affascinante opera prima del regista svedese Ruben Östlund, che debuttò al Milano Film Festival con il corto Autobiographical Scene Number: 6882. Fugge dai volti, cerca dettagli insoliti, stimola l'attenzione dello spettatore dal primo all'ultimo minuto. Titoli compresi. E alla fine, si esce dalla sala con una strana sensazione, che - involontariamente o no - ha a che fare con la bellezza.

A firework involuntarily hits in the eye an old man going to a formal dinner. Involuntarily: a girl gets drunk and is taken back home by a stranger. Involuntary is like this. A choral film taking place in the estranging Swedish summer, in which the events seem to have no cause, but just unpredictable effects.

Suspended in an alienated time, and entirely shot using a static camera, it is the fascinating first work of Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, who made his debut at Milano Film Festival with the short film Autobiographical Scene Number: 6882. He turns away from faces, he looks for unusual details, he keeps the audience's attention alive throughout the film. Including the titles. And in the end you get out of the cinema with the strange feeling that - involuntarily or not - you have seen beauty.

Note di regia - Director's statement:
"Circa dieci anni fa stavo giocando a un videogame. Lo scopo del gioco era costruire e mantenere una città a tutto ciò che conteneva. Si giocava dalla prospettiva di un uccello, da cui gli esseri umani erano rappresentati come puntini. Una delle icone nel gioco poteva dare il via a catastrofi naturali, o perfino creare un disastro nucleare. Un click sull'icona scatenava l'inferno tra gli abitanti e dalla prospettiva dell'uccello la scena assomigliava all'attività di un formicaio quando lo si tocca con un bastone.

Sentivo che la distanza emozionale creata dalla grafica del gioco suscitava in me una nuova capacità di osservazione; ero in grado di osservare in modo interessato ma nel contempo distaccato, senza giudicare e senza provare disagio (neanche per le formiche, per quel che vale!). Ripensandoci mi verrebbe da dire che mi ha reso più riflessivo, più contemplativo. I film in cui la fotografia cattura gli avvenimenti senza averne prima valutato il contenuto mi danno la stessa sensazione. Ovviamente nei miei film non riesco sempre a ottenere lo stesso, ma mi sforzo sempre di ottenere un equilibrio tra la presenza e l'assenza dei miei valori".

"About ten years ago I played a computer game. The aim of the game was to build and maintain a city and all that it entails. It was played from a bird's eye perspective, with humans represented by small dots. One of the icons in the game could start natural catastrophes, or even create nuclear meltdown. One press of the icon resulted in pandemonium amongst the inhabitants, and from a bird's eye perspective this could very much be compared to the activities in an ant hill when touched by a stick.

I felt that the emotional distance created by the game’s design instigated in me a new ability to observe; I was able to observe in an interested yet distanced manner, without judging and without any feelings of discomfort (not for the ants either for that matter!). Looking back, I would say that it made me more reflective, more contemplative. I get the same kind of feeling from films where the photographer captures events without first having evaluated their contents. I don't always achieve this in my own films, of course, but I always strive to strike a balance between presence and absence of my own values".
