Vale la pena conoscere i personaggi che popolano il mondo della Melikyan. La sirena Alisa, ad esempio, nata in riva al mare. A sei anni bambina, sogna i balletti classici e canta in un coro. La notte lui le appare in sogno, l'uomo nello scafandro. Un giorno, la piccola Alisa smette di parlare. Dodici anni dopo, maggiore età e capelli verdi in testa, lascia la casa natale e la mamma cicciona alla volta di Mosca. Dove incontra lui, un essere indifeso e problematico. La sirena senz'acqua rischia di disseccarsi nella città. Ma l'amore allaga tutto...

Scritto appositamente per Masha Shalaeva, giovane attrice che sembra approdata sullo schermo direttamente dalle acque del Baltico, Rusalka è una fiaba ammaliante, difficile da descrivere. E' un film d'acqua, di grattacieli e di sabbia. é una storia d'amore. Fuori dal comune, dall'ordinario. Ma d'amore. E in fondo ci sarà un motivo se tutti i film - corti e lunghi - della Melikyan sono stati selezionati dal Milano Film Festival. Da perderci due ore, sulla fiducia.

Anna Melikyan's films are definitely worth watching. Lunar, suspended worlds, on the border between unrestrained imagination and urban realism. And also the characters that inhabit Melikyan’s worlds are also definitely worth meeting. The mermaid Alisa, for example, who was born by the sea. As a six-year-old girl she dreams of classical ballets and sings in a choir. At night she dreams of him, the man in the diving suit. One day, little Alisa stops speaking. Twelve years later, after coming of age and dyeing her hair green, she leaves her house and her fat mom to go to Moscow. There, she meets him, a helpless and awkward being. In the city, the waterless mermaid risks drying up. But love floods into her heart...

Specially written for Masha Shalaeva, a young actress who seems to have got on the big screen straight from the Baltic waters, Rusalka is a fascinating fairytale that is very hard to describe. This film is made of water, skyscrapers and sand. It is an unusual, extraordinary love story. But still a love story. And after all there must be a reason if all short and feature films by Anna Melikyan have been selected for Milano Film Festival. Two-hour-long Rusalka is definitely worth watching - take it on trust.
Note di regia - Director's statement:

"L'idea per il film mi è venuta, come al solito, da tutto - da taccuini, conversazioni colte per caso, frammenti di frasi, fotografie che ho visto, sogni, e anche un po’ da me perché, come si suol dire: "Se solo sapeste in che fango crescono i fiori...". La Sirenetta era la mia fiaba preferita da bambina, forse perché è l'unica fiaba con una fine triste - in genere mi piacciono le storie tristi. Ma non sentivo il desiderio di trasporre la fiaba di Anderson per il grande schermo, è solo che alcuni punti coincidevano: la trama, la ragazza dai capelli verdi e Anderson. A parte Mosca, ci andava a genio la regione di Anapa: cittadine pittoresche in riva al mare. Le riprese delle strade e delle piazze sono state fatte in un'enorme stabilimento ittico che puzzava tremendamente di pesce. Mi ha fatto restare lontana dal pesce per un bel po'".

"I got the idea for the movie, as usual, from everywhere Ð from notebooks, overheard conversations, snatches of phrases, pictures I have seen, dreams and a little of myself, as they say: ÒIf only you knew from what sort of dirt flowers grow.ÉÓ. The Little Mermaid was my favorite childhood fairytale, maybe because it is the only fairytale with a sad ending Ð I generally like sad stories. But I had no desire to adapt AndersonÕs tale for the screen, itÕs just that in places it coincided: the plot line, the girl with green hair, and Anderson. Apart from Moscow, we took a fancy to the district around Anapa Ð small, picturesque towns on the seashore. The city streets and squares were filmed at an enormous fish plant that smelled very strongly of fish. It has put me off fish for a long time".
