The film follows metal fan and anthropologist Sam Dunn on a whirlwind journey through Asia, South America and the Middle East.
As he explores the underbelly of the world's scenes - from Indonesian death metal to Chinese black metal to Iranian thrash metal, Global Metal reveals a worldwide community of metalheads who aren't just absorbing metal from the West - they're transforming it. Creating a new form of cultural expression in societies dominated by conflict, corruption and mass-consumerism.
Note di regia - Director's statement:Sono amico di Sam da anni e quanto è venuto a Toronto per studiare antropologia abbiamo parlato spesso di quest'idea di scrivere un libro sulla musica e la cultura heavy metal. Stavo lavorando come consulente musicale e ho proposto di sviluppare invece l'idea in un documentario... così è nato il nostro primo film Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. Mentre scrivevamo la scaletta ho pensato che forse il miglior modo di raccontare la storia fosse attraverso gli occhi di Sam. Da fan di lungo corso del metal con una laurea in antropologia Sam incarnava quell'aspetto del metal che da sempre sentivamo dovesse essere raccontato.
I have been friend with Sam for many years and when he came to Toronto to do his graduate degree in anthropology we would often speak about his idea to write a book on heavy metal music and culture. I was working in film as a music supervisor and suggested to him that we develop the idea as a documentary instead... this led to our first film Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. While writing the treatment I thought perhaps the best way to tell the story would be through Sam's eyes. As a longtime metal fan with a graduate degree in anthropology Sam embodied the side of metal that we felt needed to be told.
Scot McFadyen è nato a Missisauga e ha studiato sceneggiatura alla University of Victoria. Ha lavorato come consulente musicale e produttore delle colonne sonore di una lunga lista di progetti cinematografici e televisivi, tra cui Licantropia Evolution, Siblings, Queer As Folk, Picture Claire e il cult FUBAR. Il primo lungometraggio documentaristico per cui Scot si è occupato di regia, sceneggiatura e produzione, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, è stato mostrato in anteprima al Toronto International Film Festival nel 2005, è stato proiettato a più di 40 festival internazionali di cinema ed è stato distribuito nelle sale di oltre 30 Paesi. Per Metal Scot ha ricevuto due nomination ai Canadian Gemini Awards, per la miglior regia di un documentario e per la miglior sceneggiatura. Sam Dunn è nato a Stroud, in Inghilterra, ed è cresciuto a Victoria, nella provincia canadese della Columbia Britannica. Ha conseguito una laurea in antropologia e storia alla University of Victoria e un master in antropologia sociale alla York University. Scot McFadyen was born in Mississauga and studied writing at the University of Victoria. Scot has worked as a music supervisor and soundtrack producer on a long list of film and television projects including Ginger Snaps, Siblings, Queer As Folk, Picture Claire and the cult hit FUBAR. Scot's first feature documentary as director, writer and producer, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005, screened at more than 40 international film festivals and was released theatrically in over 30 countries. Scot was nominated for two Canadian Gemini Awards for best direction in a documentary and best writing for his work on Metal. Global Metal is Scot's second feature documentary. Scot is currently in production on his third documentary about the Canadian musical icons Rush.
Sam Dunn was born in Stroud, England and grew up in Victoria, BC. He holds a BA in anthropology and history from the University of Victoria and an MA in social anthropology from York University. Sam's debut as a director/writer/producer, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005, screened at more than 40 international film festivals and was released theatrically in more than 30 countries. For Metal, Sam has also been nominated for two Gemini awards for Best Direction and Best Writing in a Documentary. Global Metal is his second film and together with Scot he is currently working on his third documentary on Canadian music legends Rush.
