Una meditazione intima ed emozionante sulla figura di musicista e artista di Kurt Cobain, a partire da 25 ore di interviste assolutamente inedite fatte a Cobain dal noto critico musicale Michael Azerrad per il libro Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana., Cobain gli parla di tutta la sua vita e offre spesso acute analisi introspettive su se stesso e la sua musica.

An intimate and moving meditation on the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain, based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audiotaped interviews conducted with Cobain by noted music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. In the film, Kurt Cobain recounts his own life and offers often piercing insights into his life and music.

The conversations heard in the film have never before been made public and they reveal a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but not particularly well understood.

The film is not a documentary about Nirvana, the band Kurt fronted, nor is it even a documentary in the traditional sense. There are no additional interviews with friends, acquaintances or social critics, no archival video footage, no Nirvana music or sound-a-like soundtrack. For this unique film, director AJ Schnack assembled selections from the Azerrad interviews and merged them with newly filmed, evocative imagery of the three cities in Washington state that played a major role in Cobain's life: Aberdeen, Olympia and Seattle. Shot entirely on 35mm film, Schnack brings the Northwest to life in vivid detail: the logging industry where Cobain's father worked, the small bars where local bands played their first shows, the endlessly overcast sky.

separe Note di regia - Director's statement:

Much has been said and written about Kurt Cobain in the years since his death. And much of his life is clouded behind a haze of rumors about his drug use, his suicide and the conspiracy the ories that gather around each. The person he was and many of the reasons that he became so important so quickly to so many have been nearly lost behind this mythology.

Some look at Kurt as just a music story, but I disagree. I think he's one of the most important cultural figures of the end of the 20th century and I view this film as a ninsight into not only his life but also a window on his times. For one, Kurt was the first person of his (and my) generation to speak about the massive societal changes that occurred in thelast quarter of the last century: The slow death and corporatization of thesmall town. The familial trends toward divorce, second marriages, mothers going to work and 'latchkey kids'. Ritalin being prescribed. The fears of the cold war. A sense that society was growing more and more violent.Changing views of gender and sexuality. The assault of a tabloid celebrity culture. Kurt spoke to all these - passionately, angrilyand, perhaps surprising to those that think of him solely as some zoned-out drug addict, intelligently.

I wanted to let Kurt speak for himself. I wanted to give true voice to Kurt, to let him tell his own story free from out side commentators. In the past decade, films have been made and books have been written in which friends, fans, critics and collaborators have all weighed in and have tried to give his life some context. But rarely, if ever, have we heard from Kurt himself.

For me, 'sense of place' is very important, particularly with this subject and for this film. It's hard not to see Kurt as a real embodiment of the three cities in Washington State where he lived. Although Aberdeen is just an hours drive fromOlympia, and Olympia just an hour from Seattle, the three towns could not be more different, not solely in people or architecture, but even in color palette, from the weathered grays, browns and forest greens of Aberdeen, to the colorful pastelsof Olympia to the richer hues and steels and Blacks of Seattle.
