After her mother has died of an overdose, Jeliza-Rose and her father Noah move to Texas. On the following night, Noah also overdoses and dies. Jeliza-Rose withdraws into her shell, only talking to doll heads she slips onto her fingers. Until she meets her bizarre neighbours, Dickens and her sister Dell.
