In 2035 survivors live in a grim underground world. In 1996, a fearful epidemic has killed off 99% of the world's population and the earth's surface is now uninhabitable. As surviving is getting more and more difficult, a group of scientists clutch at straws: travelling back in time to retrieve samples from the past and save the future. Due to some visions linked to his past, James Cole is the 'volunteer' selected for this travel. Back in 1996, a psychiatrist and a lunatic believe him and help him find the mysterious "Army of Twelve Monekeys".
