Joystick is an original three and a half minute short animated film commissioned by Charlie Paul, MD of Itchfilm.
Joystick is entirely hand drawn in biro, onto A3 cartidge paper. It was made over the course of a year at the Itch Film animation studio, by the director, Kevin Richards.
Joystick draws it's main influences from the classical tradition perfected by Walt Disney studios, in particular, from the intuitive animation system that was devised and practiced by Shamus Culhane. Kevin Richard's method of animation relies primarily on speed in the early stages, to allow a completely intuitive process of thought to live and breathe through the characters. It is the speed at which the characters are drawn which allows them to act, almost in real time, so that they do the unexpected. Kevin's animation places a very high emphasis on producing an empathic, emotional response from the audience. It is, in many ways, analogous to Stanislavski's acting method.
The lines in Joystick are deliberately wispy and sensous, to suggest the sexuality of the couple.
The primary aim of the film is to depict the narrative arc of a relationship that goes wrong in three minutes, using the traditions of classical animation.
