Il film è tratto dal romanzo Les fiançailles de M. Hire di Georges Simenon. Il signor Hire, strano tipo di misantropo solitario e ruvido, passa il suo tempo libero a spiare la bellissima Alice. The film is based on Georges Simenon's novel Les fiançailles de M. Hire. Mr Hire - a peculiarly solitary and rough misanthrope - spends his free time spying on the beautiful Alice. The day she discovers him, he offers her to leave her boyfriend Emile and flee with him to his native Swiss village. Meanwhile, the police keep an eye on Mr Hire, as they are investigating a young girl's murder happened a long time before. The mystery thickens.
