James ha dodici anni e vive con la famiglia nel popolare quartiere di Govan, alla periferia di Glasgow. Gli amici lo accettano a fatica e il padre beve troppo. Mentre la nettezza urbana è in sciopero e la spazzatura si accumula lungo le strade, James trova sfogo nei campi e nei canali fuori città. In uno di questi muore annegato Ryan, un suo coetaneo. Un giorno James prende un autobus, scende al capolinea in aperta campagna e vede una grande casa abbandonata: è lì che gli piacerebbe abitare.
James is twelve and lives with his family in the working-class neighbourhood of Govan, in Glasgow's suburbs. His friends hardly accept him and his father drinks too much. While the street cleaning service is on strike and rubbish heaps in the streets, James clears his mind in the fields and channels outside the city. Ryan, a boy his age, drowns in one of these channels. One day, James takes a bus, gets off at the last stop and sees a large abandoned house: this is just where he would like to live.
