A volte è davvero difficile dirsi addio. Anche quando ci si conosce appena, e non si è proprio sicuri dei sentimenti dell'altro. "Gli piacerò? Devo trovare qualcosa di molto interessante da dire, per non farmelo scappare...". La regista malese ha lo sguardo complice e sapiente di chi ha già conquistato il Festival di Rotterdam con il lungometraggio d'esordio; e di chi sa trattare la forma del corto con la poesia di quando si fa semplicemente un film.
Sometimes it is really hard to say goodbye. Even when you barely know the other one and you are not sure of his feelings. "Will he like me? I should find something very interesting to say if I do not want to lose him...". This Malaysian lady filmmaker has the knowing and expert look of someone who has already conquered the International Film Festival Rotterdam with her debut feature film and masters the short film medium with the poetry of someone who is simply making a film.

Biografia/Biography: Nata nel 1978 in un piccolo villaggio di pescatori in Malesia, nel 2002 si diploma in Cinema e animazione alla Multimedia University. Dal 2004 č attiva come regista, sceneggiatrice, produttrice e occasionalmente anche come attrice sulla scena del giovane cinema malese. Nel 2004 fonda con Amir Muhammad, James Lee e Liew Seng Tat la casa di produzione Da Huang Pictures. Ne 2005 vince il premio per il miglior corto al Festival di Oberhausen con A Tree in Tanjung Malim e nel 2009 il Gran Prix a Clermont Ferrand con Everyday Everyday. Nel 2007 vince inoltre il Tiger Award al Festival di Rotterdam con il suo lungo d'esordio Love Conquers All. Nel 2008, mentre sta lavorando al suo secondo lungometraggio A Year Without a Summer, inizia un progetto ambizioso: realizzare un cortometraggio ogni mese; si ferma a 7, e intitola la raccolta di corti All My Failed Attempts.
Tan Chui Mui was born in 1978 in Sungai Ular, a small fishing village in Kuantan, Malaysia. She has been actively involved in the Malaysia independent film scene, working as director, producer, and editor. In 2004, she set up Da Huang Pictures with Amir Muhammad, James Lee and Liew Seng Tat. Tan Chui Mui is known for her successful first feature film Love Conquers All, which won top prizes in numerous film festivals, including the Tiger award in Rotterdam. Many forgot that she is a very productive short filmmaker, who had won big prizes in two prestigious short film festival in the world: Principal Prize in Oberhausen Short Film Festival with A Tree in Tanjung Malim (2005), and Grand Prix in Clermont-Ferrand Short film Festival with Everyday Everyday (2009). In 2008, while developing her second feature films, she had this project of making a short film every month. She had only managed to make 7 short films, and she called them All My Failed Attempts. Currently she is working on her second feature The Year Without A Summer.
