Sinossi / Synopsis
Il regista Martin Radich nel 2009 ha scritto un romanzo che include pensieri filosofici accompagnati da fotografie. È nato e cresciuto a Blackpool, cittadina sulla costa nel Nord dell'Inghilterra, di cui conosce bene alcuni personaggi particolari: persone con dei problemi, che non si stanca di osservare con affetto; persone che con un termine medico un po' asettico si possono definire sociopatici. Per realizzare questo film, a metà strada tra il documentario e la fiction, li ha osservati per alcuni giorni, ha fatto in modo che si fidassero di lui e gli permettessero di entrare nelle loro case e nelle loro vite: ha quindi chiesto loro di recitare, scrivendo una sceneggiatura che però scaturisse nel modo più naturale possibile dalle loro storie personali.
Il risultato è un film disturbante, che parte dal cinéma verité tanto caro al cinema british degli ultimi vent'anni per andare oltre e sperimentare una forma narrativa nuova. Parte da una storia per esplorarne altre tre, per poi ritornare alla fine al personaggio principale: Matt Walker ha appena perso suo padre e si ritrova a confrontarsi con le sue paure, con la sua incapacità a relazionarsi col mondo e con la sua solitudine.
Il finale, nonostante la apparente difficoltà del tema, lascia nello spettatore una sensazione di emozione positiva, che deriva dallo sguardo continuamente affettuoso e intimo del regista, che non giudica mai il senso di esclusione sociale che i personaggi subiscono. Il film è coprodotto dalla Warp Films, etichetta di artisti come Aphex Twins e casa di produzione dei film di Shane Meadows.

In 2009, filmmaker Martin Radich wrote a book of philosophical thoughts coupled with photographs. He was born and raised in Blackpool, a seaside town in the North of England, and he knows some of its many odd characters very well: people with problems, whom he never gets tired of observing; people who could be described, with a rather cold medical term, as sociopaths. To make this film - half-way between documentary and fiction - he observed them for several days and he managed, by obtaining their trust, to enter their houses and lives. He asked them to perform, writing, however, a script that naturally originated from their own stories.
The result is a disturbing film that draws inspiration from the cinéma vérité - so much cherished by British filmmaking over the - and then further develops it to experiment with new narrative styles. It starts from a single story, then explores those of three other people, and finally comes back to the main character: Matt Walker has just lost his father and has to face his fears, his inability to relate to the external world, and his loneliness. Despite the apparent difficulty of the topic, the ending arouses positive emotions, that result from the constantly tender, intimate look of the filmmaker, who never judges the sense of social exclusion experienced by the characters. The film was co-produced by Warp Films - the label of artists like Aphex Twins and the production house of Shane Meadows' films.

Io credo di essermi posto questa domanda: è giusto considerare il cinema come una forma d'arte oppure come un lavoro soggetto a inevitabili compromessi? È giusto pensare al proprio futuro semplicemente vedendolo come una fine del presente che si sta vivendo? Nel bene e nel male, abbiamo fatto un percorso preciso, abbiam fatto quel che abbiam fatto. Tornare sui propri passi, replicare pedissequamente quello che è successo nel passato, mi sembra voglia dire davvero mancare di convizione. È per me un film che manca di convinzione e di cuore, è un film senza uno scopo. Crack Willow ha uno scopo, che corre nelle sue stesse vene.
I think I asked myself the questions: should I consider cinema as a form of art or as a work subject to unavoidable compromises? Is it right to think about one's own future simply as a conclusion of the actual situation? For good or for bad, we followed a precise route, and we did what we did. To hold back, to simply replicate what has gone before, seems to me to lack conviction. A film without conviction at its heart, is a film without purpose. Crack Willow has purpose running through its veins.

Biografia/Biography: Martin Radich è nato nel Nord dell'Inghilterra nel 1973. Per due vinto premi con i suoi cortometraggi all'Edinburgh International Film Festival, nel 1999 e nel 2000. Ha lavorato per molti anni come regista e direttore della fotografia realizzando una ventina di pubblicità e oltre trenta tra cortometraggi e documentari brevi e ottenendo anche una nomination ai BAFTA, gli Oscar inglesi. Non ha mai abbandonato la sua cittadina natale e da lì continua la sua osservazione attenta della realtà e delle persone.
Martin Radich was born in the North of England in 1973. He won prizes twice at Edinburgh International Film Festival, in 1999 and 2000. He has been working as a director and cinematographer for several years, and he realized more than thirty works - including short films and short documentaries - and was nominated for a BAFTA, the British version of the Academy Awards. He never moved from his hometown, the place where he carefully keeps observing reality and people.
