Sinossi / Synopsis

La storia di Manzo, gigante molto (troppo?) buono, pescatore solitario che a quaranta anni non ha ancora trovato una donna, candido e ingenuo quanto diffidente ed enigmatico. Un giorno, dopo aver guadagnato una sonora figuraccia a una festa per single, Manzo scopre che una mamma e suo figlio vivono nascosti nel suo armadio. Fosse stato un umano come gli altri, Manzo li avrebbe cacciati. E invece Manzo sfuria un po', e poi li prende a vivere con sé. In fondo, è come essere una famiglia. Secondo film di un 27enne laureato in matematica che un giorno si è messo a girare il mondo e si è innamorato del cinema di ogni paese visitato, trasferendo immagini e suggestioni sulla pellicola. Futoko è cristallino, surreale, ingenuamente divertente e più ironico di quanto sembri. Qualcuno dirà che Manzo corre come Forrest Gump e gli intermezzi musicali sono così sopra le righe da non poter non sembrare un omaggio al musical, ma il nume tutelare Kitano sta lì dietro, e sorride (se riuscite a capire la sua espressione). Dal porto oscuro della solitudine, Manzo parte alla ricerca dei pesci dell'oceano. E non è più solo.

This is the story of Manzo, a good giant (maybe too good), who, at the age of forty, still finds himself to be single. He is a solitary fisherman, as much pure and na•f as distrustful and enigmatic. One day, after having made a fool of himself at a single party, Manzo discovers a woman living in his closet together with her son. If he had been like anybody else, he would have chased them away. After an outburst of anger however, he decides to take them with him. After all, it does feel like a family. This is the second feature of a 27-year-old filmmaker, who majored in Mathematics. He then started travelling around the world and fell in love with films from every country he visited, adding all the resulting images and sensations on film.
Futoko is crystalline, surreal, naively funny and more ironic than one might think. Someone may say that Futoko runs like Forrest Gump and the intermezzos are a clear tribute to musicals. Yet, one can clearly feel the fatherly look of its inspirer, the great Kitano - for those who manage to read his expression. Manzo leaves the dark harbour of solitude to search for the ocean's fish. Now he is not alone anymore.

Persone comuni che vivono vite assolutamente ordinarie. Questo il soggetto del film. E per vite ordinarie intendo che sono ordinari i cibi di cui si nutrono, gli abiti che indossano, le case in cui si riparano. Anche le storie d'amore che vivono lo sono. Quello che avevo in mente di fare era concentrarmi sui lampi di umanità, sulla sensazione di sorpresa causata da un evento eccezionale, e sull'amore che si manifestano e percorrono queste vite ordinarie. Penso davvero che l'amore sia qualcosa che spunta sempre fuori, non importa quanto tu ti impegni a nasconderlo, come una cosa che ti sbuca dalla tasca o da un cassetto. In realtà io non sono ancora abbastanza vecchio per poter parlare seriamente d'amore. Eppure, proprio come Manzo, il protagonista del mio film, vorrei dedicarvi questo gioiellino spuntato da quel cumulo di rifiuti che viene comunemente chiamato dandysmo. Con affetto.

Ordinary people living ordinary lives are depicted in this film. By referring to them as ordinary, I'm referring to the food they eat, the clothes they wear, the houses they seek shelter in - and, at times, the love stories they are involved in. I wanted to focus on the glimpses of humanity, the occasional surprise and the love that shine through such existences. I believe that love is something that always sticks out - no matter how hard one tries to hide it - just as something slipping out of your pocket or your drawer would do. I'm still too young to speak eloquently about love, though like Manzo, the film's protagonist, I'd like to dedicate this necklace spun from the junk called "dandyism" that I have gathered. With deep affection.

Biografia/Biography: Naito Takatsugu si è laureato in matematica alla Tokyo Metropolitan University nel 2005. Durante gli studi si è concesso un anno sabbatico e ha viaggiato in quasi trenta paesi del mondo. Il suo lungometraggio d'esordio, Midnight Pigskin Wolf, è stato presentato nel 2005 al Pia Film Festival dove ha ottenuto il prestigioso Best Concept Award (TBS Award). The Dark Harbour è il suo secondo film ed è stato presentato nel 2009 in Concorso al Festival di Rotterdam.

Naito Takatsugu graduated in Mathematics from the Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2005. During his studies, he took a year off to travel through approximately thirty countries. His debut feature film Midnight Pigskin Wolf (2005) was awarded the prestigious Best Concept Award (TBS Award) at Pia Film Festival. The Dark Harbour is his second feature, that competed at the 2009 Rotterdam festival.
