Sinossi / Synopsis
È il 1989 quando Giovanni Testori, scrittore, drammaturgo, pittore e critico d'arte, lancia in una mostra il giovane e sconosciuto pittore bergamasco Sergio Battarola. Testori ne compra i disegni, cura il catalogo, scommette su un talento. Sergio si crea delle aspettative ma dopo la scomparsa di Testori, nel 1993, le cose sono andate diversamente. Un documentario che è una storia lombarda, sui veri demoni che abitano questa terra, e che si allarga a raccontare ben oltre il locale il difficile rapporto tra maestro e discepolo. Non è necessario amare il personaggio, ma colpisce lo strano percorso che trasforma la luce offerta da Testori in un'ombra sulla vita di un altro, tra l'alternarsi di materiali d'archivio dedicati all'intellettuale lombardo e la quotidianità della bassa bergamasca dove ancora oggi, lontano dal mondo delle gallerie, vive il pittore. Un discorso che si compie quando Battarola dipinge un autoritratto che trasforma nell'immagine del vecchio Testori. Un momento dove il farsi dell'immagine, ripreso sotto l'obiettivo, diventa la riflessione che apre il film: una mise en abyme che spiazza lo spettatore. Ultimo film del giovane regista Francesco Gatti, tragicamente scomparso nel 2008, l'opera testimonia anche la forza e l'unione del cinema indipendente milanese: un film corale di cui gli amici del regista - tra gli altri Giovanni Maderna, Gianluigi Toccafondo, Massimo Salvucci e Giusi Castelli - hanno curato il montaggio definitivo partendo dai materiali girati

1989: Giovanni Testori - writer, dramatist, painter and art critic - organizes an exhibition to launch the young, unknown Bergamasque painter Sergio Battarola. Testori buys his drawings, edits his catalogue, bets on his talent. Sergio has many expectations, though after Testori's death in 1993, things took a different direction. This is a documentary on a true story from Lombardy, on the true demons who inhabit the earth; a documentary, in short, whose aim is to go beyond local boundaries and to tell the challenging relationship between master and disciple. One does not need to admire the protagonist, but rather what really strikes, is the odd journey that turns the light offered by Testori into a shadow in someone else's life. Archive files dedicated to the Bergamasque intellectual alternate each others with the daily routine of the southern Bergamo region, a place far from the main art galleries, where the painter still lives. The narration fulfils its task as Battarola paints a self-portrait that he changes into a picture of old Testori; the act of creating an image mirrors the film's opening idea: a mise en abyme that wrong-foots the audience. This work - the last film of the young filmmaker Francesco Gatti, who tragically passed away in 2008 -confirms the Milanese independent filmmaking's strength and union. It is a choral film whose final cutting has been edited by the filmmaker's friends - including Giovanni Maderna, Gianluigi Toccafondo, Massimo Salvucci, and Giusi Castelli - starting from the sequences that had already been shot.

Biografia/Biography: Nasce a Treviglio nel 1977. Dopo aver vinto nel 2000 il Premio Solinas con la sceneggiatura Storie per Dormire, è assistente alla regia nel film L'Amore Imperfetto di Giovanni Maderna (2001). Dal 2002 comincia a collaborare come montatore con la Limbo Film di Roma e con lo Studio Nino di Milano. Il suo primo documentario è del 2005, Irreality Show, premio produttivo Filmmaker DOC 10, presentato al Batik Film Festival di Perugia e fuori concorso al Bellaria Film Festival. Dopo il cortometraggio A Relativistic Film (2006, realizzato insieme a Giusi Castelli), presentato al festival Arcipelago di Roma e al Festival Internazionale del Cortometraggio di Siena, vince il premio produttivo Filmmaker DOC 11 con il documentario Le Regole del Gioco, presentato in concorso al Bellaria Film Festival 2007. È tragicamente scomparso a Milano l'anno seguente.
He was born in Treviglio in 1977. After winning the Premio Solinas in 2000 with the screenplay of Storie per dormire, he became the assistant director of Giovanni Madema for the film LĠAmore imperfetto (2001). Since 2002, he has been working as an editor for Limbo Film in Rome and Studio Nino in Milan. In 2005, he shot his first documentary, Irreality Show, which earned him the Filmmaker DOC 11 productive award ; the film was presented at Perugia's Batik Film Festival and entered the out-of-competition section of Bellaria Film Festival. In 2006, along with Giusi Caselli, he made the short film A Relativistic Film, presented at Rome's Festival Arcipelago and at Festival Internazionale del Cortometraggio in Siena. He then won the Filmmaker DOC 11 productive award with Le regole del gioco, a documentary competing at Bellaria Film Festival 2007. He tragically passes away in Milan in 2008.
