"Mary e Max vivono ai due lati opposti del mondo. Lei è una bambina australiana, timida, imbranata e con una madre alcolizzata, lui un ebreo quarantenne di New York, Max Horowitz, obeso, paranoico, affetto da disturbi autistici. In Australia ci sono i colori, in America è tutto in bianco e nero: siamo in un mondo di pupazzi plastilina, fantasticamente animato in claymation da Adam Elliot, al suo primo lungometraggio dopo aver vinto l'Oscar con Harvie Krumpet nel 2003 per il miglior cortometraggio d'animazione. Per legare insieme i personaggi, Elliot sfrutta una delle più antiche tecnologie: la lettera. Un giorno la piccola Mary nell'ufficio postale apre a caso l'elenco telefonico di New York, copia un indirizzo e scrive. Max risponde: i due diventano pen friend legati dalla passione per la cioccolata e i disegni animati. Accompagnati da una voce narrante, sul difficile crinale tra tenerezza e ironia, i diversi mondi dei due personaggi corrono paralleli negli anni tra lettere e dolciumi fino a incontrarsi. Non mancano le risate e neanche le lacrime, tra Max che cerca di affrontare i suoi problemi e Mary che cresce, si sposa e viene lasciata dal marito per un pastore di animali. Un film in linea con le migliori conquiste narrative del cinema d'animazione contemporaneo. Quello che conta sul potere unico dell'animazione: saperci far ridere (e piangere) di situazioni anche drammatiche nella realtà. Un potere a cui siamo abituati da quando un Coyote, tanto tempo fa, è caduto in un burrone e noi ci siamo messi a ridere, senza spaventarci".

Mary and Max live at the opposite sides of the world. She is an Australian little girl, shy and clumsy, with an alcoholic mother; he is a forty-year-old Jew of New York City, Max Horowitz, obese, paranoid and affected by autistic disorders.
Australia is colourful, America is all black and white: it is the plasticine puppets' world, wonderfully animated by Adam Elliot, who used the Claymation technique for his first feature film after winning the Academy Award for the best animated short film in 2003 with Harvie Krumpet. In order to connect the characters, Elliot uses one of the oldest means of communication: the letter. One day little Mary is at the post office, she randomly opens the New York City phone directory, writes down an address and sends a letter to it. Max replies, and they become pen friends, sharing the same passion for chocolate and cartoons. Described by a voice-over, in a mixture of tenderness and irony, letters and chocolate, the two characters' lives, so different one from the other, follow parallel paths, until they finally meet up. This story brings laugh and tears, as Max tries to face his problems and Mary grows up, getting married and then left by her husband for a herdsman. This film follows the line of the most successful animation films, making us laugh (and also cry) for serious matters. It is something we are used to, ever since a coyote, long time ago, fell into a ravine, making us laugh and not fearing it.

Il personaggio di Max è ispirato al mio amico di penna di New York, che come Max è affetto dalla sindrome di Asperger; volevo demistificare le concezioni erronee che molti, anche i cosiddetti esperti, hanno riguardo a queste persone. Molte persone dicono spesso di sentirsi diverse: io sono una di queste, perciò i personaggi che dipingo sono quelli con cui mi identifico, e so che anche il pubblico vuole sentire queste storie. E ancora, questo film esplora il nostro desiderio di essere accettati e amati, non importa quanto siamo diversi. Questo film ha molti momenti scuri e provo sempre a mantenere la varietà di colori al minimo per differenziarlo dal mondo "matto" e variopinto della maggior parte dei film d'animazione.
Max is based on my pen friend in NY. He, like Max, has Asperger's and I wanted to demystify the many misconceptions others have about these people, even the so-called "experts". A lot of people say they often feel different: I am one of them, so the people I portrait are the people I relate to, and know audiences also want to hear these stories of difference. And still, this film explores our desire for acceptance and love, no matter how different we are. This film has many dark moments and I always try to keep the variety of colours to a minimum, acting a point of difference to the "wacky" and colourfilled world of most animated films.
