Imberbe latino e lunatica belga fuggono a Londra, il primo per cercare il padre disperso, la seconda per ricucire il suo cuore in brandelli per una relazione difficile. Si incrociano, a volte, ma non per forza, nè per necessità. Londra è la dissolvenza dei confini, è un magma freneticamente ribollente dove puoi essere tutto: non conta da dove vieni o dove vai, dove abiti, che musica ascolti, chi scegli di amare e con chi scegli di fare sesso. Alexis Dos Santos, argentino fuori sede, acclamato con Glue nel 2006, più che dirigere si immerge nell'emotività dei suoi personaggi, restandone contagiato, come se cercasse anche lui quello che (sa che) non c'è. Tra le notti in bianco, i letti sfatti e i concerti alcolici, Dos Santos descrive la vita a vent'anni con partecipazione e delicatezza. Unmade Beds è anche un bel documento sul sottobosco musicale londinese: il regista ha perlustrato Brick Lane, Tottenham e Shoreditch reclutando band in ascesa per suonare nel suo film. Ascolterete We Are Performance, Kimya Dawson e pure i Tindersticks. Ma la chiave del film la offrono i Ricchi e Poveri, quando il loro incipit-di-una-vita inquadra lo stato emotivo del protagonista con una sincerità che nessun dialogo scritto avrebbe raggiunto. Che confusione! Sarà perchè ti amo?
Latin brat and lunatic Belgian flee to London; the first to search his disappeared father, the second to gather the pieces of her broken heart after a difficult relationship. At times they run into each other, by chance, not because of necessity. London represents the fading of boundaries, it is a frantically boiling magma, where you can be whatever you like: it doesn't matter where you come from or where you are going to, where you live, what kind of music you like, or who you choose to love or have sex with.
Alexis Dos Santos, an Argentinian who lives abroad, appreciated by the public after his 2006 film Glue, does more than direct a film. He dips himself into the characters emotions, getting totally involved, as if he was himself looking for something that (he is aware of it) doesn't exist. Leading us through sleepless nights, unmade beds and alcoholic concerts, Dos Santos delicately describes life at the age of 20.
Unmade beds provides a good picture of London underground music scene. The director has scoured Brick Lane, Tottenham and Shoreditch to recruit emerging bands to play in his film. We can listen to We Are Performance, Kimya Dawson and Tindersticks. But the key to understand the film is given by Ricchi e Poveri, whose most famous verse perfectly depicts the protagonist frame of emotions, describing it much better than any dialogue could do. Che confusione! Sarà perché ti amo?.
