Domenico e Antonietta. Cercano un posto di lavoro. Giovani sperduti nella Milano dei primi anni Sessanta, città in divenire, squarciata dai cantieri, già popolata da mille stranieri in casa propria. La Milano delle aziende dove "il lavoro non ¸ granchè, ma il posto fisso é garantito". Delle 1400 lire al mese. Domenico, occhi furbi e ingenui, che si innamora come Charlie Chaplin e finisce recluso nel sistema come Buster Keaton. Perchè Il posto, prima che un film post-neorealista, è un'opera debitrice del film muto, della commedia degli sguardi, pieno di personaggi talmente leggeri da sembrare figurine cartonate. È il primo film "vero" di Olmi, anche se è pieno di sequenze che potrebbero farlo sembrare un potente documentario. Aveva appena trent'anni Olmi quando lo realizzò, vincendo un importante premio a Venezia. Per qualcuno il corrispettivo "realistico" dell'esplosione della nouvelle vague. Per altri, un film diviso maniacalmente in due parti, l'illusione e la delusione, l'ambizione e la rassegnazione. Un film magico, leggero, che racconta il mondo degli impiegati partendo da pochissimi, essenziali dettagli, come un'unica inquadratura sull'arredamento di una stanza in affitto, o come una lampadina che non funziona. Finisce con una festa, ma non c'è niente di cui essere contenti. Domenico é diventato adulto. Antonietta, ossia Loredana, ha debuttato in questo film. Poi si è ritirata. Si è innamorata, e da allora vive ancora con Domenico. Pardon, con Ermanno.
Early 1960's. Domenico and Antonietta are looking for a job. They are young and lost in the heart of Milan - an always-developing city, slashed by building sites and already inhabited by thousands of foreigners. Milan - a city crowded with industries, in which "work is nothing special, but at least is guaranteed and secure". A city where the average monthly wage amounts to 1,400 lire. Domenico, a young man with a sly and naive look, falls in love like Charlie Chaplin and ends up confined in the system like Buster Keaton. The Job is not just a post-neorealist film, but first and foremost a work that owes much to silent films and the comedy of glances - it is a film filled with characters so light to seem paper dolls. This is Olmi's first "real" film, even though it has sequences that might make it resemble to a powerful documentary. When he shot it, Olmi was only thirty years old, and the film made him win an important award in Venice. For some people, this is the "realistic" equivalent of the nouvelle vague explosion. For others, it is maniacally split in two: illusion and disappointment, ambition and resignation. It is a light, magic film depicting the world of office workers starting with very few essential details - such as the single take of the furniture in a rented room, or a non-working light bulb. The film ends with a party, though there is nothing to be happy about. Domenico has become an adult. This was Loredana's (or rather Antonietta's) debut film. Then she retired. She fell in love and ever since then, she has been living with Domenico. Oops, meant with Ermanno.
