Sinossi / Synopsis
Olmi racconta di aver avuto l'idea di questo documentario mentre era in viaggio e di essersi fermato ad osservare la bellezza del Po e allo stesso tempo la sofferenza legata alla distruzione dell'ambiente che lo circonda. Girato assieme a un gruppo di collaboratori di Ipotesi Cinema, Lungo il FIUME - e il maiuscolo è voluto da Olmi - è un documentario di contemplazione, affine nello spirito ai capolavori di Franco Piavoli, dove il fiume parla. L'uomo non appare quasi mai, se non alla guida di mostri meccanici o ridotto a minuscola sagoma nella maestosità del paesaggio. Accompagnato dalla lettura della Genesi e dalle note del Messia di Händel, Lungo il FIUME è un cinema di mimetismo totale, che influenzerà Olmi fino ai suoi ultimi lavori.
Olmi tells he got the idea for making this documentary as he was travelling. He stopped to watch the beauty of the Po river and at the same time noticed the suffering coming from the destruction of the surrounding environment. Shot together with some collaborators from Ipotesi Cinema, Lungo il FIUME - it was Olmi who decided to write it in capitals - is a contemplative documentary along the lines of Franco Piavoli masterpieces, in which the meaning flows from the river. People - when featured at all - are driving monstrous machines or portrayed as small silhouettes moving in the majestic landscape. Accompanied by the reading of excerpts from the Genesis and by Haendel's Messiah, Lungo il FIUME is an example of unobtrusive filmmaking that will influence Olmi until his last works.
