L'Anima Mundi nel credo filosofico dei Platonici il principio vitale che assimila tutti gli esseri viventi, vegetali e animali. Il regista Godfrey Reggio, in collaborazione con il WWF, esplora le dimensioni, le forme e i colori del mondo che abitiamo: il galoppo di una mandria di bisonti nella prateria, il lento movimento ondulatorio di una medusa, il volo di un colibrì. Le immagini si susseguono al ritmo delle musiche originali di Philip Glass e di suoni appartenenti a diverse tradizioni etniche. Si riconosce, a margine di questa esplosione, vitale e quasi eccessiva, un incanto autentico nel riscoprire i confini vasti e mutevoli di ci che siamo.
Anima Mundi in the philosophical credo of the Platonists is the vital principle that assimilates all living beings, whether plants or animals. The director Godfrey Reggio, in collaboration with the WWF, explores the dimensions, the forms and the colours of the world we live in: the gallop of a herd of bison in the prairies, the slow undulating movement of a jellyfish, the flight of a humming bird. The images follow on in sequence to the rhythm of original music by Philip Glass and sounds belonging to different ethnic traditions. Alongside the vital and almost excessive explosion, an authentic enchantment in rediscovering the vast and changing limits of what we are can be recognized. The fi lm is accompanied by the live performance of the famous Terry RileyÕs ŌIN CÕ, byTopolovska Minimalna Orkestra.
Note di regia / Director's Statement"Several ecological themes are firmly based on the idea of anima mundi, which attributes a cosmic breath to the earth. Nature, joyfully venerated for thousands of years by people all over the globe, supports the suffering of its generation simply because it is animated by a deeply rooted and mysterious vital force which justifies everything as well as the position of all elements in the complex order of nature. Godfrey Reggio, the director of Anima Mundi, translated this concept into images to interpret WWF's campaign on biological diversity: the concept of anima mundi forms the basis of this film and requires a stylistic type of poetic communication, which is both immediately and deeply felt as it emotionally expresses the myriad of meanings contained in this concept, rather than to simply describe and explain them. Godfrey Reggio's intention is that of conjuring up a sense of the force of nature by following a path which goes beyond habit, calling forth the deep rooted and archaic sense of man's 'being a part' of nature."

È conosciuto principalmente per la sua Trilogia qatsi, con la quale ha inventato un nuovo stile cinematografico. I film che compongono la trilogia, infatti, Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, e Naqoyqatsi, senza parole e senza attori, sono basati sulla intensa combinazione di sole immagini, realizzate con una estrema cura fotografica, in un montaggio ritmato dai suoni e dalla musica scritta da Philip Glass. Si tratta di opere tese ad ottenere un forte impatto visivo, per mostrare l'effetto distruttivo che l'attuale civiltà industriale ha sull'ambiente e il disequilibrio sociale fra il nord e il sud del mondo. Le sue innovazioni, quali l'uso di immagini rallentate o accelerate, in combinazione con musica di tipo minimalista, hanno presto costituito un modello stilistico largamente ripreso in tutto il mondo, tanto nel cinema che nella pubblicità televisiva.
