Sinossi / Synopsis
In barba a ogni logica commerciale - e alle leggi antifumo - JJ raccoglie nel 2003 i primi tre cortometraggi della serie Coffee & Cigarettes (il terzo, Somewhere in California, aveva vinto la Palma d'Oro a Cannes nel 1993) e ne gira appositamente altri otto. Diventati presto di culto, i corti riprendono due o più attori in conversazione, sempre seduti e sempre in compagnia di sigarette e caffè, elementi ricorrenti del cinema di JJ. Un collage di sketch - alcuni più comici, altri più esistenzialisti - sulle dipendenze e sulle manie, in cui le diverse scenografie e la fotografia in bianco giocano un ruolo fondamentale. Un cast stellare, tra i quali Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Roberto Benigni, i White Stripes, che hanno tutti l'aria di divertirsi parecchio.
Going against every commercial logic - and anti-smoking laws - in 2003 JJ put together the first three short films in the series Coffee & Cigarettes (the third, Somewhere in California, had won the Golden Palm in Cannes in 1993) and made eight others especially. The short films, which soon became cult movies, show two or more actors talking, always seated and always with cigarettes and coffee, recurring elements in JJ's cinema. A collage of sketches - some more comic, others more existentialist - on dependences and manias, where the different sets and black and white photography play a fundamental role. A star-studded cast, including Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Roberto Benigni and the White Stripes, who all look as though they are enjoying themselves tremendously.
