Sinossi / Synopsis
William Blake, ingenuo contabile, attraversa gli Stati Uniti alla volta di un nuovo incarico. Arrivato nel West, scopre che il lavoro è svanito ed è solo in una realtà ostile. Accusato di un omicidio che non ha commesso, si ritrova sulla testa molte taglie. In pratica, è un uomo morto. Un indiano mezzosangue, appassionato di poesia e convinto che lo "stupido uomo bianco" sia in qualche modo l'anima del grande poeta, lo aiuterà a trasformarsi in un uomo che dolcemente va verso il suo destino. Prendendo coscienza della certezza della morte, William Blake libera gli ormeggi della propria esistenza. La canoa che lo conduce nel mare aperto sul finale, come in Lightning over Water di Wenders, è il traguardo dei sensi, la fine del dolore. Ancora una volta a fornire la chiave d'accesso all'altra dimensione è l'amicizia con un personaggio dalle origini e dalle abitudini opposte - qui il pellerossa Nessuno - in cui JJ riversa la sua fiducia paradossale e "fuori dal sistema" negli uomini. Prende le convenzioni del western, le ribalta, le svuota di ogni necessità narrativa, e ne fa la sua artistica rielaborazione, con la presenza evocativa (e ironica) di Robert Mitchum in una delle sue ultime apparizioni. Fedele alla sua totale indipendenza, stravolge anche le regole sull'uso della colonna sonora, convincendo Neil Young ad registrare l'accompagnamento a film finito. La spettrale chitarra elettrica del canadese diventa l'eco di un'elegia del western.
William Blake, a naïve accountant, crosses the United States to go to a new job. When he arrives in the West, he finds out that his job has disappeared and he is alone in a hostile reality. Accused of a murder he did not commit, he ends up with a price on his head. Practically speaking, he is a dead man. A half-breed Indian, passionate about poetry and convinced that the "stupid white man" is in some way the soul of the great poet, will help him turn into a man who gently goes to meet his fate. Becoming aware of the certainty of death, William Blake cuts off the moorings of his existence. The canoe that takes him into the open sea in the ending, as in Lightning over Water by Wenders, is the goal of the senses, the end of pain. Once again, it is friendship with a character of opposing origins and habits - here the Indian Nobody - in whom JJ places his paradoxical faith "outside the system" of men that provides the key to enter the other dimension. Jarmusch takes the conventions of the Western, turns them upside down and empties them of every narrative necessity. He reworks it artistically and includes the evocative (and ironic) presence of Robert Mitchum in one of his last appearances. Faithful to his total independence, he also turns the rules of using the soundtrack upside-down, convincing Neil Young to record the accompaniment when the film was finished. The Canadian's spectral electric guitar becomes the echo of an elegy for the Western.
