Gli ultimi giorni di vita del grande Nicholas Ray, tra i registi più "irregolari" che lavorarono a Hollywood tra gli anni 50 e 60, autore di capolavori come Gioventù bruciata e Johnny Guitar, da molti anni uscito dal sistema per dedicarsi all'insegnamento. Nella forma di un film che documenta Ray e Wim Wenders nel tentativo di fare un film assieme, Nick's Movie è rimasto una delle opere più controverse sulla relazione tra morte e cinema, sui limiti dello sguardo, sulla necessità o la rinuncia a mostrare. Sulla barca che accompagna le ceneri di Ray al largo (come nel finale di Dead Man), Wenders e gli amici della troupe rielaborano la scioccante esperienza, mentre un giovane guarda in camera e accende un cerino, ruotandolo per non farlo spegnere. The last days of the life of the great Nicholas Ray, one of the most "irregular" directors who worked in Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s, the author of masterpieces such as Rebel without a cause and Johnny Guitar and who had abandoned the system many years earlier to teach. In the form of a film that documents Ray and Wim Wenders in their attempt to make a film together, Nick's Movie is one of the most controversial works on the relationship between death and the cinema, on the limits of the gaze, on the need or decision not to show.
On the boat taking Ray's ashes to the open sea (as in the ending of Dead Man), Wenders and the friends of the crew, re-elaborate on the shocking experience, whilst a youngster looks into the camera and lights a candle, rotating it so that it does not go out. It is Jim Jarmusch.
