Sinossi / Synopsis
Film in tre movimenti. In The New World, il giocatore d'azzardo Willie deve ospitare per qualche giorno la cugina Eva, appena arrivata dall'Ungheria. Inizialmente contrario, l'uomo si abitua alla presenza della ragazza, fino a dispiacersi della sua partenza per Cleveland. In One Year Later, Willie e l'amico Eddie utilizzano una grossa somma vinta giocando per andare a trovare Eva a Cleveland. Giunti sul posto si annoiano, e decidono di tornare a New York. In Paradise i due tornano a prendere Eva e viaggiano verso la Florida. Persi tutti i soldi al gioco, le loro strade si separano, ma un colpo di fortuna imprevisto e sconvolgente cambierà le loro direzioni. Stranger than Paradise è il film-simbolo del cinema indipendente americano. Fino alla sua comparsa i prodotti della cultura underground a basso budget possedevano un'aura "maledetta" e "artistica", che li teneva a distanza dal pubblico. Il riconoscimento critico - premiato con la Caméra d'Or a Cannes e col Pardo d'Oro a Locarno nel 1984 - e l'efficacia dello stile, contemplativo ma decifrabile, ricco di situazioni insolite che producono un sincero umorismo, non solo avvicinarono JJ e il film al grande pubblico, ma tracciarono una direzione mai più abbandonata per il cinema lontano dalle logiche industriali. È una fotografia degli Usa dal punto di vista di chi arriva e chi parte, di chi non si trova a proprio agio ma non sa come cambiare la situazione, dei soggetti prediletti da Jarmusch, gli "sradicati". Girato in location reali e con attori non professionisti, è lo sviluppo di un primo frammento, dal titolo The New World, realizzato grazie a Wim Wenders, che diede a JJ la pellicola avanzata dalle riprese di Lo stato delle cose. Un regalo preziosissimo.
A film in three movements. In The New World, the gambler Willie has to put up his cousin Eva, who has just arrived from Hungary, for a few days. Against the idea at first, the man gets used to the girl's presence, and is sorry when she leaves for Cleveland. In One Year Later, Willie and his friend Eddie use a large sum of money won gambling to go and see Eva in Cleveland. When they get there, they are bored and decide to go back to New York. In Paradise, the two go back to pick up Eva and make their way towards Florida. When they lose all their money gambling, their paths divide, but an unexpected stroke of good luck will change their directions.
Stranger than Paradise is the film-symbol of independent American cinema. Until its appearance, the low-budget products of the underground culture had a "accursed" and "artistic" aura that kept them away from the public. Critical recognition - twinning the Caméra d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Leopard in Locarno in 1984 - and the efficacy of the style, contemplative but decipherable, rich in unusual situations which produce a sincere sense of humour, not only brought JJ and the film to the general public, but marked out a direction that has never been abandoned by the cinema far from industrial logics. It is a snapshot of the USA from the point of view of those who come and those who go, those who feel out of place but do not know how to change the situation, the favourite subjects of Jarmusch, the "rootless". Shot in real locations and with non-professional actors, it is the development of a first fragment, entitled The New World, made thanks to Wim Wenders, who gave JJ the film left over from the shooting of The state of things. A very precious gift indeed.
