Long Island è il quartiere più elegante di New York, a due passi dal mare, a due passi dalla Grande Mela. È il quartiere che F.Scott Fitzgerald ha scolpito nell'immaginario collettivo con Il Grande Gatsby. Così newyorkese, fino al midollo, eppure cosò silenzioso. Quaggiù, ogni gesto e ogni sguardo sembra amplificato e dilatato, nel tempo reale e nel tempo dell'anima.
Tre anime, quelle in cui il regista (newyorkese) Eric Mendelsohn - vincitore con questo film del premio miglior regia al Sundance 2010 - ci fa entrare. Entriamo anche a Long Island, naturalmente. Ci entriamo, ma dopo poco ci rendiamo conto che ne restiamo un po' fuori, poiché il nostro punto di osservazione sono i giardini - sul retro - di tre case eleganti, silenziose. Tre giardini, appunto, dove capitano un sacco di cose.
Proviamo a individuare tre immagini, tra le molte invenzioni del regista, che resteranno impresse nello sguardo dello spettatore. Un padre e marito in crisi telefona alla famiglia dal suo giardino, fingendosi in un viaggio di lavoro per cui non è mai partito. Una bambina raccoglie una preziosa collana appartenente alla madre in mezzo ai fili d'erba. Una casalinga ha sempre desiderato conoscere la vicina, attrice famosa, e le offre un passaggio: alla fine del viaggio la guarda senza capirla.
Tutti i personaggi sono sul punto di esprimere qualcosa di profondo,e ma si rimane in una curiosa attesa per capire che cos'è, e dove lo vuole portare il regista: cullato da movimenti di macchina mirabili, controluce e zoom improvvisi, Mendelsohn si muove nelle pieghe del racconto, in estatica ammirazione di un mondo nascosto.

Long Island is the most elegant area of New York, a stone's throw from the sea and from the Big Apple. It is the area that F. Scott Fitzgerald carved into our imaginations with The Great Gatsby. So New York, to the core, and yet so quiet. Down here, every gesture and every glance seems amplified and expanded, in time and in the spirit. The director (and New Yorker) Eric Mendelsohn - who won an award for best director with this film at Sundance 2010 - takes us into the souls of three people. We are also taken into Long Island, of course. We enter, but before long we realise that we remain slightly detached, and that our view is of the gardens - the rear gardens - of three elegant, silent houses. In these three gardens a lot of things happen. We detect three images, amid the many inventions of the director, which remain the focal point for the spectator. A father and husband in a crisis phones his family from his garden, pretending to be on a business trip that never left. A little girl picks up a valuable necklace belonging to her mother that she has found lying in the grass. A housewife has always wanted to get to know her neighbour, a famous actress, and offers her a lift: at the end of the journey she looks at her without understanding her. All the characters are on the verge of expressing something profound, but we are kept in suspense wondering what it is, and where the director wants to take it: lulled by impressive camera movements, backlighting and sudden zooms, Mendelsohn moves in the folds of the story, in ecstatic admiration of a hidden world.

"Mentre stavo mettendo insieme i personaggi e le storie di 3 Backyards, mi sono balenate per la testa moltissime immagini. Una era quel tipo di luce che vedi riflessa nelle campane a vento o nei cristalli, abbagliante, multiforme, mobile. L'altra era un insieme di interni ed esterni che mi hanno sempre colpito; l'ombra degli interni delle case di periferia durante il giorno, lunghi tratti di strada inquietanti, eccessivamente illuminate dal sole, le segrete aree boschive di foglie bagnate terriccio scuro. Ero consapevole con 3 Backyards che volevo ricreare una sorta di documentario sulla natura dei personaggi ed i luoghi in cui vivono."
"While I was piecing together the characters and stories of 3 Backyards, a number of images began presenting themselves to me. One was the kind of light you see reflected in wind chimes or prisms; dazzling, fragmented and mobile. Another was a set of interiors and exteriors that have always excited me; the shadowy interior of suburban homes during the day, long scary stretches of overly sunlit roads at noon, secret wooded areas of wet leaves and black soil. I was aware with 3 Backyards that I wanted to make a kind of nature documentary about the characters and the town they inhabit."

Eric Mendelshon ha lavorato nell'industria cinematografica NewYorkese negli ultimi venti anni. La sua opera prima, Judy Berlin è stata selezionata al Festival di Cannes tra le pellicole in concorso e ha vinto il premio come miglior regia al Sundace Film Festival. Il suo ultimo film 3 Backyards, in competizione al Sundance Film Festival 2010 ha portato ad Eric il premio per la miglior regia. Ha inoltre lavorato insieme al regista Woody Allen per oltre otto anni in film come Everyone Says I Love You. Attualmente è professore associato di cinema alla Columbia University .
Eric Mendelshon has been working in the New York film industry for the past 20 years. His feature film debut, Judy Berlin was an Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival and won Best Director at Sundance Film Festival. His new film, 3 Backyards premiered in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it garnered the Best Director award. Eric has worked for director Woody Allen for over eight years on such films as Everyone Says I Love You. Presently, Eric holds the position of Associate Professor of Film at Columbia University's Film Program.
