L'inizio di questo eccezionale documentario, che segue un gruppo di soldati danesi nella loro prima missione di guerra a Helmand, in Afghanistan, è folgorante: si parte con la festa d'addio, tra fiumi di birra e spogliarelliste, si sale sull'aereo (con riprese mozzafiato dall'alto tra le montagne afgane), e si arriva a Camp Armadillo, sulla linea del fronte con i talebani. Perché qui c'è la guerra, per chi se lo fosse dimenticato; e ci siamo dentro fino al collo. Il regista Metz è dentro la missione: sta attaccato ai suoi protagonisti, li segue, indaga la loro parte più oscura con una profondità che dimostra l'intimità della camera rispetto alla situazione, anche in condizioni rischiose, trovandosi a documentare momenti di grande tensione. Armadillo è un documento impressionante della folle ascesa che porta i giovanissimi soldati verso uno stato adrenalinico incontenibile, che li aiuta a sopravvivere, a uccidere, a non avere paura. Fino al ritorno a casa. Qualcuno decide che tornerà alla guerra, qualcuno no. Perché c'è la guerra, per chi se lo fosse dimenticato.

The beginning of this exceptional documentary, which follows a group of Danish soldiers on their first war mission in the Helmand province of Afghanistan, is dazzling: it starts with the farewell party, amid rivers of beer and strippers, then moves onto the plane (with breath-taking shots of the Afghan mountains), and arrives a Camp Armadillo, on the front line with the Taliban. Because here there is a war, for those who have forgotten; and we are up to our necks in it. The director Metz is inside the mission: he is joined to his protagonists, he follows them, he investigates their darkest sides with a depth that demonstrates the intimacy of the camera, even in dangerous conditions, to document moments of great tension. Armadillo is an impressive depiction of the rising madness that leads the young soldiers to a state of uncontainable adrenaline, which helps them to survive, to kill, and to not be scared. It ends with the return home. Some decide to return to the war, some donÕt. Because there is a war, for those who have forgotten.

"With Armadillo, I was curious to explore how the micro level of war Š where human interaction takes place Š affects one of the greatest conflicts of our time. I've always been interested in making film about people who go through life altering experiences. It involves a "rite de passage" where they are ultimately faced with themselves and their own humanity. In the context of war and the young men who are fighting them, I was interested to find out how the perception of masculinity, the good, the bad, the civilized and the barbaric, is reflected in action and how these concepts are adapted in this coming of age story."

Janus Mets ha la sua svolta come regista con i suoi due film sul matrimonio tra immigrati, la prostituzione e la globalizzazione: Love on Delivery e Ticket to Paradise. Ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti per i suoi lavori. I suoi film sono stati trasmessi dalle emittenti di tutta Europa. Inoltre Metz ha conseguito un master in Comunicazione e sviluppo internazionale ed ha scritto vari articoli sulle tematiche documentaristiche. Armadillo è il suo primo documentario lungo ed è stato selezionato per la Semaine de la Critiques, al Festival de Cannes 2010.
Janus Metz had his breakthrough as a director with his two films on marriage migration, prostitution and globalization: Love on Delivery and Ticket to Paradise. He has received numerous recognitions for his work. His films have been screened by broadcaster all over Europe. Armadillo is Janus Metz first feature length documentary and it has been selected for Semaine de la Critiques, Cannes Film Festival 2010.
