"Winter. Flanders. Three poor Christmas carol singers. Three newly-wed, drunk Magi wearing fake crowns who, between desolate inns and unmoving landscapes, find themselves (perhaps) at the birth of a new Jesus. Their profits are made charity, but the dissent between the three is growing, the contrast between piety and secular intolerance is too strong for them to be able to continue on the same street. They end up, almost accidentally, in an urban landscape that remains intentionally unnamed, crossing through modernity without being infected by it, remaining anchored in a medieval dimension which manifests itself through the confrontation/contrast with the contemporary. Adapted from a Timmermans play, this debut by 25-year-old Van den Berghe, who has experience of the world of theatre and of breakdance, is alive with metaphor and personification; it is an elegant and ramshackle reconstruction of a sacred medieval representation, an ironic and imbued with innocence homage, to man and his (childish?) need for mystical certainties and faith. And above all it is a homage to cinema, which is capable of recreating a world apart, in the no manÕs land between modernity and timelessness, between the ecstatic delirium of faith and a corruptible, profane cynicism."

"Secondo me, il tentativo di dare una nuova interpretazione della fede è una delle più grandi sfide della società contemporanea. Come se qualcosa ci mancasse, come se non credessimo pi� a quello che ci succede. La forza del cinema di oggi risiede nel fatto che � capace di neutralizzare questo senso di mancanza e di restituirci la fede. Fede nella terra su cui camminiamo ogni giorno, e nel cielo sopra di noi. In noi stessi e nell'altro."

"In my opinion, the reinterpreting of faith is one of the biggest human challenges of today's society. It feels like there's something missing, like we don't believe what is happening to us anymore. The strength of modern film lies in the fact that it can neutralise this feeling and give us back our faith. Faith in the ground we walk on and the sky above us, in ourselves and in the other."

Gust Van den Berghe is a multidisciplinary artist. Through a great love for music he discovered dance, and quickly grew to become a notorious breakdancer. He danced in theater pieces including for Praga Khan, the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Robert Groslot and Marc Bogaerts. He studied audiovisual arts at the RITS academy in Brussels. His first feature film Little Baby Jesus of Flandr is developed from his graduation project. Currently heÕs developing his next feature film together with Minds Meet.
