Robert Mitchum è morto, viva Robert Mitchum. Si apre nel segno del cinema, fin dal titolo, il film d'esordio di Olivier Babinet - vincitore con il suo corto C'est plutôt genre Johnny Walker il prestigioso Festival di Clermont Ferrand nel 2009 - e Fred Kihn. La storia è di quelle subito molto cinematografiche. Franky è un attore in crisi, insonne e un po' paranoioco, e Arsène è il suo amico produttore: padre putativo furbacchione e arraffone, gli sta attaccato perché anche lui non è in grado di trovare lavoro, ossia di fare film, e Franky è pur sempre la sua unica possibile fonte di guadagno. E siccome Arsène è pure un cleptomane, oltre che un ex-rocker fallito, la molla che fa scattare il viaggio è il furto di una macchina, che servirà alla coppia per arrivare in tempo ad un appuntamento importante con un vero regista americano. Peccato che l'appuntamento è unĠinvenzione di Arsène, e che la meta è il circolo polare. Molto rock, il loro viaggio. Come in tutti i road movie che si rispettino, i due lungo il percorso si imbattono in personaggi strani, intoppi di ogni genere, paesaggi incredibili. Ma soprattutto, e questa è la cifra stilistica struggente del film, lasciano che spesso la realtà e il sogno si confondano, fanno in modo che lo spettatore sprofondi insieme a loro in una vaga confusione mentale che è stordimento e vittoria della fantasia sulla realtà, rock e cinema. L'arrivo al circolo polare - in uno scalcagnato festival di cinema, tra l'altro - e l'incontro con il vecchio regista di Hollywood che alla fine cambierà comunque le loro vite, sono un pezzo di bravura e uno svelamento esilarante del sogno del cinema.

"Robert Mitchum is dead, long live Robert Mitchum. The debut film by Olivier Babinet and Fred Kihn opens in a cinematic style, beginning with the title. Franky is an actor in a crisis, suffering with insomnia and a touch of paranoia, and Arsène is his producer friend, a putative father who is attached to Franky because Franky is still his only source of income. And as Arssène is also a kleptomaniac, they steal a car to get to an appointment with a authentic American director. Unfortunately the appointment is an invention of Arssène's, and the destination is the Arctic Circle. Their journey is very rock'n'roll. As in any self-respecting road trip movie, the two encounter strange characters, problems of every kind, and incredible landscapes. But above all, and this is the harrowing key stylistic feature of the film, they often allow reality and dreams to become indistinguishable, so that the viewer sinks with them into a hazy dizziness as imagination triumphs over reality, rock and film. Their arrival at the Arctic Circle - at a shabby film festival, among other things - and the meeting with the old Hollywood director is a piece of cleverness and an exhilarating revelation of the dream of cinema."

"Come dice il titolo stesso, Robert Mitchum est mort è un film che si posiziona in quel punto in cui il mito incontra la realtà. Il mito in questione è quello del cinema americano, e in particolare del cinema degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta. Quel mito incontra la realtà della vita di Franky, un attore al capolinea che il suo manager Arsène cerca disperatamente di mantenere vivo. L'idea principale del film è quella di mostrare, attraverso una regia precisa e incisiva, il modo sorprendente in cui la realtà, se guardata da un certo punto di vista, finisca per somigliare a un set cinematografico".
"As the title itself hints, Robert Mitchum Is Dead is a film positioned at the point where myth meets reality. The myth in question is that of American cinema and, more specifically, the cinema of the 1950s and 60s.The matching reality is that of Franky, an actor at the end of the line whose manager, Arsne, desperately tries to keep motivated. The main idea is to show, through precise and incisive framing, how reality can seem like a film set when viewed from a certain angle."

Olivier Babinet è un talento autodidatta. Fin dall'adolescenza ha realizzato commedie per la radio e romanzi fotografici. Nel 2008 Olivier è segnalato nella rivista americana Boards tra i 30 "Directors to Watch" nel mondo. Fred Kihn ha esplorato nella fotografia i temi della violenza, del gioco e del ritratto. Per il Festival di Cannes 2005, Fred ha realizzato delle rassegne fotografiche sui diversi generi cinematografici.
Olivier Babinet is a self-taught talent. Since his early teenage years, he has been writing and producing radio dramas and photographic novels. Olivier Babinet directed recently C'est plutot genre Johnny Walker - Special Jury Prize at Clermont Ferrand 2009. In 2008, Olivier Babinet is short-listed by the US magazine Boards among 30 other worldwide "Directors To Watch". Robert Mitchum is dead is his first Long Feature film. Fred Kihn after being a truck driver, an ambulance driver, a teacher and a worker in a sausage factory, took a dramatic turn into photography explorating the themes of violence, games and portraiture within society. For the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, Fred Kihn produced a daily photo series on the different genres of cinema for newspaper Libération.
