Nel 1982 una canzone dei Minor Threat ha dato inizio a un fenomeno controculturale che si è diffuso in tutto il mondo, lo Straight Edge. "In 1982 a song by a band called Minor Threat started a worldwide counter-culture phenomenon called Straight Edge. This vibrand underground culture was hatched in the underground music scene of Washington DC, nurtured across the US and eventually spread around the world. It has inspired a mix of lifestyles ranging from pacifism and abstinence on one side of the spectrum to violence and intolerance on the other. While being adopted (or co-opted) by movements including animal liberation, Krishna consciousness, Christian conservatism and anti-consumerism, it has simultaneously generated a merchandising empire based on its own uniquely DIY, copyright free franchise, not to mention millions of record sold.
