Sinossi / Synopsis
Sul finire degli anni '70, appare sulla scena di Bristol una band che giocando sulla sua stessa originalità si fa chiamare The Pop Group. Generi apparentemente lontani e inconciliabili si ibridano in un punk funk destrutturato, sporco di dance, free jazz, tribalismi e dissonanze. La voce di Mark Stewart si adegua a un'urgenza espressiva incontenibile, a volte urla, altre scandisce teatralmente, altre ancora biascica. I testi sono fieramente politicizzati. Un gruppo/utopia che presto si scoglie, era solo l'80. Stewart prosegue la sua traiettoria, in sodalizio con la storica etichetta dub di Adrian Sherwood, la On U Sound, come membro part-time dei New Age Steppers per poi fondare i Maffia, ancora attivi. Nel 2006 incontra Tøny Schifer che decide di documentare questo percorso dall'inizio. Il regista lo segue per tre anni a casa con la madre, in tour con i Maffia, per le strade di Bristol, solo o con gli amici, intervista parenti, amici, estimatori, e moltissimi musicisti che a Mark Stewart sentono di dover qualcosa. L'attenzione al dettagli apparentemente insignificanti della quotidianità, il gioco perfetto tra l'ironia del regista e quella del suo protagonista, la cura dell'immagine e l'eccellenza delle testimonianze e dei materiali d'archivio, fanno di questo film coraggiosamente autoprodotto un ritratto unico e smaliziato di uno dei più grandi musicisti sconosciuti alle masse degli ultimi trent'anni.
The late 1970s, the Pop Group. Apparently irreconcilable genres are interbred in a deconstructed funk punk, smudged with dance music, free jazz, tribalism and dissonances. Mark Stewart's voice adapts to an uncontainable expressive urgency, the lyrics are proudly politicized. This band/utopia dissolved in 1980. Then came the work with the historical dub label of Adrian Sherwood, the On U Sound, the New Age Steppers and the Maffia. In 2006 Tony Schifer decided to document this path from the beginning. The attention to apparently banal details of everyday life, the perfect contrast between the irony of the director and that of his character and the excellence of the interviews and the archival footage make this self-produced film a unique and intelligent portrait of one of the greatest and least known musicians of the past thirty years.

Tøni Schifer is a german film-maker from Berlin, graphic artist and an expert at making compilation LP's. Working as part of his record label Crippled Dick, Hot Wax!, and its sister company Monitorpop, Toni has worked on many music DVD's, including BERLIN SUPER 80, ATARI TEENAGE RIOT or DIE TOEDLICHE DORIS as well as compiling the CDs Beat at Cinecittˆ, the Bruce LaBruce Soundtrack "Otto; or, Up with dead people" and the very successful Vampyros Lesbos series. Since 1994 he released records from Holger Czukay (CAN), Lydia Lunch, Anubian Lights, Earthlings? and many others. At the moment he is working on 2 documentaries which will be produced in 2010.
