Coinvolgente ritratto di giovani alla deriva nella provincia mineraria di Shanxi, Cina settentrionale, nei primi anni ‘90. Desiderosi di sperimentare la nuova libertà nell’economia post-socialista, tre liceali, “fratelli d’armi”, sognano di vivere in assoluta libertà, senza (pre)occuparsi di nulla, solo di procurarsi denaro facile. Ma la vita ha in serbo altro per loro… Costretti ad affrontare la realtà, si risvegliano in una situazione molto simile a quella dei loro genitori, proprio quella da cui volevano fuggire.

“Questo è il mio primo lungometraggio. Avevo 26 anni quando ho inziato a lavorare al progetto. Il film parte dalla mia storia personale e tratta temi quali la gioventù, l’ansia di crescere e diventare responsabili. La mia gioventù è stata come un aereoplano che all'improvviso inizia a precipitare. Di fronte al pericolo incombente, ogni passeggero è costretto a fare le proprie scelte prima di poter pensare agli altri”.

A gripping study of drifting youth in the mining province of Shanxi, Northern China, in the early nineties. Experimenting with new found freedom in a post-socialist economy, three high school boys, “sworn brothers”, dream of liberty, carefreeness, and easy money. But life catches up with them… They are forced to face reality and wake up to a life similar to that of their parents, which they had tried to escape from.

“This is my first feature film. I was 26 when I started this project. The film draws from my personal history, and deals with themes like youth, the angst of growing up and responsibility. My youth was just like an airplane that breaks down abruptly in midair. In the face of impending danger, every passenger is forced to make his own choices before he is able to take care of the others”.
