Robert ha 16 anni e tra due settimane finisce la scuola. Per la prima volta nella sua vita deve prendere una decisione seria sul suo futuro. E le cose iniziano ad andare male. Mentre i suoi amici hanno idee, per quanto estreme, sul loro futuro, Robert si appoggia a un’insolita amicizia con un giovane professore, anima persa quanto lui, che finisce per avere una grande influenza sulla sua vita. La storia potrebbe sembrare un classico racconto di formazione, ma, come direbbe lo stesso protagonista, "Ormai è fatta".
Robert, 16 years old, is two weeks from leaving school. Now, for the first time in his life, he has to make a serious decision about the future. And that's where things start to go wrong.
While his friends have ideas, some extreme, about what they're going to do, Robert sparks an unconventional friendship with a brash, young teacher, who's as much of a lost soul as Robert, and this has an important affect on his life. This could be described as a coming-of-age story but as Robert would say, "It's been done."
"Mi ricordo di essermi sentito così quando ero giovanissimo. Nel momento in cui scrivevo il film era molto più importante cogliere questo stato d’animo che offrire soluzioni o risposte ai problemi del protagonista. Non ho mai affrontato il film come un tipico film sul liceo. Penso che la mia idea fosse più vicina a quella di un film sul carcere: Robert all’inizio fa parte di una gang, poi viene messo in isolamento, poi conosce il Signor Roy, che lo cambia un po', e quando ritorna nel gruppo se ne distacca per ritrovarsi isolato e in pericolo, anche se sa che è la cosa giusta da fare".
"I remember feeling like that sometimes when I was young. I felt at the time of writing that it was much more important to capture that emotion than to give solutions or answers to his problems. I never approached the film as a typical high school film. I think my idea was closer to that of a prison movie. Robert is part of a group or gang at the beginning. He gets into trouble and gets put into isolation. He gets to know someone, Mr. Roy, with whom he can relate and that changes him slightly. When Robert rejoins the group he begins to distance himself from them and that leaves him exposed and in danger, even though he knows he’s doing the right thing".
