Different American Films
The season of contemporary American productions was first featured in 2006 with the aim of showing how independent films made in USA portray their own social and cultural background. Which is also a breeding ground for wars, intolerance and persecutions, magnificence and - more often - miseries which are rarely questioned by mainstream filmmaking, except for some significant cases.
The first edition highlighted a tendency for young US filmmakers to create self-referential representations instead of depicting a socio-political situation which seems to be determined by a general public that still supports current US politics.
On the contrary, many 2007 productions, mainly short films and some sophisticated features, describe the persistence of a culture marked by strong and impregnable contrasts, of family frictions and personal afflictions, of arrogant self-confidence, of warlike and violent feelings which are ever-present in the US visual imagination.
This kind of imagination is often pervaded by a deep sense of unease or even revulsion.
That's why we hope that political dissent - with the help of filmmakers as well - will never be defeated.
