Introduction
The special event of the 2009 Focus on Animation is Adam Elliott's Mary and Max, the first animation feature to enter the Festival's Feature Film Competition. It is the historic result of a five-year-long research work carried out with passion.
This year's short film marathon provides a cross-section of animation film production, introducing the most important animation schools in the world (Gobelins, Supinfocom, Filmakademie Baden-Wuttemberg, Royal College of Arts), the leading state-of-the-art communication agencies also producing animations (London-based Nexus and Passion Pictures), and the independent production houses of very young artists (like The Finger Trap by Julia McLean) that, as in the exemplary case of The Big Buck Bunny, focus first and foremost on web distribution.
The constantly growing number of high-quality short films led us to reconsider the marathon's criteria and to double the short film section by organizing a second afternoon marathon. This year's programme, therefore, could compete with those of the most important European animation festivals. Over the years, the Focus has broadened its interests, thus paying more and more attention to workshops and master classes. This year, the workshop dedicated to professionals will explore the pixilation technique, and it will be held by Portuguese animator José Miguel Ribeiro, who will open the marathon showing his award-winning short film Passeio de domingo. Finally, an round table organized in collaboration with eight Lombard animation companies will be dedicated to professionals from the sector, but also to students and animation-lovers, who will consider the evolution in new digital technologies with regards to the international distribution strategies.
