This season was first organized because we had received too many films. We had been greatly impressed by some Italian short films and we wanted to give their filmmakers the chance to meet and exchange ideas. A selection of short works we didn't consider ready for our international competition, but that at the same time we wanted to present and support, as they provided a cross-section of the Italian film production. The prerequisite is the presence of the filmmakers at the screening.
Back in 2002, we had over twenty films, and decided to start Italian Get-togethers. But this year something went wrong: this catalogue features some films, but the list is very short. Out of 399 Italian short films submitted, these are the ones we selected to represent our idea of what Italian shorts are at the moment. If the level of diversity is still the same, the stories told and the techniques used have become increasingly static. In a year in which Italian filmmaking has offered excellent works, this is, at least, strange. Maybe we haven't found the films, maybe they haven't been submitted, maybe they are still to be shot. We wait for news, discussions, and films to watch.
