The soul leaves the body but refuses to pass over the threshold. Death, a kind woman in black, follows him to accompany him on this final journey, but the soul isn’t ready - he wants to see, he wants to understand. Best animation at South By Southwest, Coda is more than just a study in technical precision and classic 2D animation that has absolute respect for colour and background music. It is a work of exceptional depth and symbolism: from the title that alludes to the cyclical nature of life, to the appearance of the fox - the guide of the soul in the “need to see”. With suspension of disbelief perfectly executed, Coda kidnaps the audience to then let it go gently.
